Week 1 - The Door Problem

After reading the Door Problem by Liz England, I realized that there are a lot of interesting roles in the industry. Personally, I find that my strengths lie in programming or creative aspects, and I like working in teams, as opposed to myself. My weakest area is probably my visual-art skills and knowing how to communicate with social media. Hence, the roles that sound best to me are Creative Director, Writer, Project Manager, or any other Programmer role. I believe that being a Writer could be very hard, yet rewarding at the same time. I write and world-build in my spare-time and I strongly believe I could be a creative asset when designing character and world identities within the lore of the game. Additionally, being a Project Manager seems like an essential but some-times overlooked role, and I enjoy planning events and deadlines with group members and friends. Programmer roles are familiar to me, as I have interned in them before. I often find them very methodical and grindy, but I enjoy that form of experience. Lastly, I believe that with many years of experience in the industry, I could undertake the role which I find the hardest out of all the listed choices, the Creative Director. I find that a lot of stress and energy is put into this role, and the Creative Director truly shapes the future of the game, more-so than any other role. But of course, I’m not saying any of the roles are unimportant.

Out of all of the roles, my weakest would be Animator and PR. Even though I said visual-art was my weakest, I have had experience when creating Concept art, and especially working on environments and special FX. But sadly, I have not yet had the experience of animating 3D models, and I intend to improve my ability to animate 2D sprites. I find individuals who have mastered the art and animation to be very inspirational, and I wish to one day achieve a fraction of their skills. Finally, I have little to no ability in navigating social media. I believe this to be a useful but overlooked role again, like the Project Manager, but I honestly do not intend to further my expertise in this area in the future.
